Whitehaven Beach Vacation & Travel Guide

Whitehaven Beach is located on Whitsunday Island, one of the 74 islands that make up the Whitsundays in Australia. The 8 kilometers (5 miles) beach is known for its white sand and crystal clear water. The sand is made up of 99% silica, so it is white. The water is clear because it is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and is protected from pollutants.

The beach is located in the southern part of Whitsunday Island and is very popular among tourists, especially during the summer months. The beach is part of the Whitehaven Beach Marine Park.

Although the sand is 99% silica, it is not glass! This beach is not suitable for walking barefoot because it is very hot.

The beach is a top-rated destination for snorkeling and scuba diving because of its crystal clear water, a wide variety of corals, and the chance to see the “Whitehaven Beach White Tip,” an endemic species of shark.

Whitehaven Beach is one of the must-do things when visiting the Whitsundays. The hotel you stay at will probably have boat trips from their dock, but the beach is also reachable by public boat tours.

How to get to the Whitehaven

The beach can be accessed by boat or helicopter, and several resorts are located on the island. The most popular way to get to the beach is to take a boat tour from Airlie Beach. Several companies offer tours, but the Whitehaven Beach tour with Sunlover Cruises is my favorite.

The tour includes a visit to the iconic Heart Reef, a coral formation that looks like a heart. It is only accessible by boat and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area. The tour also includes a visit to Hill Inlet, known for its swirling colors.

Fly to Whitsunday Coast (PPP) airport in Proserpine. Then get to the city of Airlie Beach by taxi or bus. The city offers many day trips to the island.

Wealthier travelers usually prefer to get to the Whitsunday Coast via Hamilton Island. To do this, you need to fly to the Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) and take an excursion to Whitehaven Beach there

Hotels near Whitehaven

Hamilton Island is the nearest place where you can find a large number of hotels.

In addition, there are many campgrounds directly on Whitsunday Island where you can spend the night in a tent.
