Le Morne Mountain

Le Morne Mountain is located in the southwest of Mauritius and is the island’s second-highest peak at 556 meters (1,824 feet). The mountain is a World Heritage Site and of great geological interest as it is the only known example of a submerged volcanic crater. The mountain is also of great historical and cultural importance.

The mountain is made up of basaltic lava and is surrounded by a coral reef. The crater is believed to have formed around 30,000 years ago when the island was still attached to the African mainland. The crater is about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 miles) in diameter and 500 metres (1,600 feet) deep.

The first recorded ascent of the mountain was made by a group of French soldiers in 1744. The summit was not reached again until 1838 when a group of Englishmen made the ascent.

The mountain is a popular hiking and climbing destination and offers stunning views of the island and the surrounding ocean. There are several hiking trails of varying difficulty levels.

The mountain is also home to the Le Morne Brabant, a endemic plant species which is found nowhere else in the world.

The Le Morne Mountain is a symbol of Mauritius’s slavery history and is also a reminder of the island’s volcanic past. The mountain is a popular tourist destination and offers visitors the chance to experience the island’s natural beauty and learn about its history and culture.
